Guidance for school age parents
|
In the event of a school age girl becoming pregnant, the
following procedure should be followed:
- the school should be notified of the pregnancy
- the school should advise the
Education Welfare Officer who will refer to the Specialist
Education Welfare Officer
- the Health Visitor advises the
Specialist Education Welfare Officer
- there will be a Home Visit to discuss a range of options; one
being receiving tuition at a Children's Centre
- the pregnant pupil will remain in mainstream until 9 weeks
before their due date
- A MAT B1 form is required for confinement date, available from
the midwife
- the Health Visitor will advise when the mother is fit to resume
tuition
- there is the option for the mother and baby to attend the
Children's Centre where available. The mother will receive tuition
while the baby is cared for at the Children's Centre / Nursary /
Creche or home
- after nine weeks the mother will return to mainstream education
while the baby continues to attend the Children's Centre, where
available, if this support is required
- the Re-intergration Officer for Teenage Parents will organise a
Pastoral Support Plan (PSP) with the school and mother to include
medical checks and clinic visits.
Second Visit
A second visit will be arranged to go into the details of the
provision. The Re-intergration Officer for Teenage Parents will
check if the mother is fit and able to continue in mainstream. If
she is unfit, a medical certificate is required so that tuition can
start earlier than the nine weeks. This is the time to arrange an
introductory meeting at the Children's Centre or other provision
with mother, prospective father (if appropriate), parent / carer,
Health Visitor, Tutor and Re-intergration Officer for Teenage
Parents.
When a teenage parent situation is reported to the Council,
steps will be taken to ensure that the best well-being and support
are offered.
