Kent 4 star Council

Learning Champions and Lone Stars

The Kent Learning Champions (KLC) scheme started in 2003 and encourages learners to become 'learning champions' to promote the benefits of lifelong learning to all.

What is a Kent Learning Champion?

A Kent Learning Champion is a volunteer aged 19+ who has completed one of the OCN 'Accessing Lifelong Learning' courses. Upon becoming a champion, they are then equipped with more details of the learning opportunities available in their area. KLCs are fully supported by the scheme manager and other staff in their local area and any expenses and childcare costs are paid. The scheme is part of Kent Adult Education Service's Neighbourhood Learning Strategy.

Champions are:

  • ordinary people who work as volunteers to help others in their community to access the opportunities and training available
  • enthusiastic learners who can inspire support and encourage others by passing on their enthusiasm for learning
  • networkers between local groups, schools, community and voluntary organisations.

Why become a Learning Champion?

You will:

  • gain a recognised qualification
  • develop new skills and understand how people learn
  • meet new people
  • improve your personal, employment and career prospects
  • become a voice for the local community on adult learning
  • help develop community learning.

How do Learning Champions make a difference?

Champions:

  • encourage friends, neighbours, work colleagues and others
  • network with local groups, schools community and volunteer organisations
  • voice the learning needs of the community
  • promote learning at local events.

The 'Accessing Lifelong Learning' course

  • is free
  • leads to a qualification
  • runs for two hours a week for 10 weeks
  • takes place at a local community venue.

The Kent Learning Champion Scheme is also being 'evolved' to train lone parents to help others into learning and work. Training will focus on overcoming the specific barriers that lone parents experience in accessing education and employment opportunities. This is part of EVOLVE, an EQUAL project funded through the European Social Fund.
