Kent 4 star Council

Personal development

The personal development programme provides a range of study opportunities that are designed to help you to develop as a person and gain confidence in your everyday life and in new activities. Many courses will support you as an employee to gain new skills and become more effective.

Some courses are related to an occupation and provide the opportunity to gain a qualification.

We try to offer a range of courses with the emphasis on progression and continued learning throughout life to support you in your personal and professional development.

This year we have more 'taster' and short courses so you can try something new and remember our slogan - forget the diet, exercise your mind!

Book keeping and accounting

Whether you want a career change or just want to keep the best household accounts ever, bookkeeping is for you. We have a comprehensive suite of courses that allow you to focus on either just manual accounting or the option to include computerised bookkeeping/accounting.

Computerised bookkeeping, using Sage Line 50 software, is generally required by employers so is an ideal programme if you are preparing to enter employment.

Management

Some good managers are born but most are trained.

Team Leading Introductory Certificate Level 2 is for those working or wanting to work at team leader level (that means planning and monitoring the completion of tasks with a team).

Management Introductory Certificate Level 3 is for those working or wanting to work at first line management level (that means managing a small team, their performance and development and any change)

These courses are accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) which is recognised in the workplace and are a progression route to further management training. They are 16 weeks long with a final submission of a written assignment. Each course will require commitment and some self-study, ideally creating links with your job and improving what you do at work.

We also offer a range of one-day courses for those not looking for a qualification but wanting to gain confidence in specific areas of management.

Counselling

We have been delivering counselling training for more than 20 years. Our tutors are practising counsellors and our courses are recognised by approved accreditation bodies.

Introductory courses, accredited by AQA, are 16 weeks long and you can choose either a general introductory programme in counselling skills and concepts or a course specifically aimed at those working with children and young people. We advise you to take an introductory course before enrolling on a one-year programme, particularly if you have no previous counselling experience.

If you want to study counselling further, you can progress to the Certificate in Counselling Skills followed by counselling studies. These are one-year programmes accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB). Please contact the programme manager for counselling courses in your area and advice on entry requirements and progression routes before enrolling on a course at this level.

Teaching assistant

Teaching assistants make a real difference to children's lives and can have a positive effect on grades. The OCR Certificates for Teaching Assistant Qualifications at Level 2 and 3 are nationally recognised and provide essential knowledge and skills for those working as teaching assistants in either a paid or voluntary capacity.

The courses are for one year and it is essential to have a school placement to support your learning. The level three course is more appropriate for teaching assistants with experience in a paid role and the level two is more suitable for those with less experience or those planning to work in this field. A pre-course assessment is held to confirm that the course you have chosen is suitable for you and a range of study support is available.

We also offer introductory courses at level one accredited by the Open College Network. These short courses cover strategies for supporting children with literacy and numeracy and are suitable for parents or classroom volunteers working with children at Key Stage 1 and 2.

Specialist courses for teaching assistants who wish to acquire further skills and knowledge in specific areas of their work, such as behaviour management or supporting specific learning difficulties, are available in some centres. These courses are at level three for 16 weeks and are accredited by the Open College Network.

British Sign Language (BSL)

If you have a hearing loss and wish to study sign language, the tuition is free if your course is over 20 hours. There is also a 50% concession on tuition charges if you have a close family member who is deaf.

Learning sign language is interesting, challenging and can be very rewarding. We offer qualifications which are accredited by the Council for the Advancement of Communication with Deaf People (CACDP) which is recognised by employers.

The CACDP Sign Language Level 1 course is a one-year moderately intensive course that prepares you for a short one-to-one assessment with your tutor at the end of each of three units. If you are successful you gain a Level 1 Certificate in BSL.

The CACDP Sign Language Level 2 is a one-year course comprising three units. If you are successful you gain Level 2 Certificate in BSL.

New this year are Deaf Awareness courses leading to a Level 1 CACDP Certificate.

We also offer non-accredited Sign Language courses to offer you a short introduction or something to bridge the gap between Level 1 and Level 2.

Lipreading

If you suffer from a hearing loss, learning to lipread will give you confidence and improve communication with family, friends and work colleagues.

Lipreading courses are 10 weeks long and you will learn vital communication tactics and be given advice about equipment that may assist you.
These courses are free. Students can enrol onto subsequent 10 week courses to continue with their studies and new students may join at any time throughout the year if there is a place available.

Self development

What does 'self development' mean - bodybuilding? No it's a range of courses to help you to develop both personal and work skills. Our short courses could change your perspective on life, make you smile and they will certainly make you think about yourself.

Courses such as life laundry: de-clutter your life, confidence building, stress management could improve your ability to cope with difficult or demanding situations. Why not try public speaking or assertiveness and if it is bodybuilding you are looking for try the fitness section!

Learn with the children

The personal development 'learn with the children' programme offers an opportunity for adults and children to experience the fun of learning together.

We have a range of activities which are informative, practical and enjoyable. The courses offered include rocket science and wildlife detectives. Why not come along with your children - it's not rocket science…or is it?

Parenting

KAES has a countywide programme of courses for parents and carers of children which can be offered in schools, community venues or our adult education centres.

These courses are not about being the perfect parent but they do provide an opportunity to address practical day-to-day issues. Topics include learning through play, understanding children's behaviour, bullying, communication and confidence for parents. For more information and details of the courses offered in your area contact your local programme manager for parenting or your community learning manager.
