Art courses

All of our courses are taught by experienced tutors most of whom are practising artists and can therefore bring a wealth of experience to their classes.

Day and short courses

These non-accredited short courses are designed to give you a taste of your chosen aspect of painting and drawing. They are not comprehensive but do set out to be interesting and enjoyable and learners will experience the specific skill, technique or genre at a basic level.

All courses are taught initially 'in groups', but then with the emphasis on individual achievement. Introductory demonstrations or presentations will be followed by individual tuition.

These are mainly practical courses where a degree of manual dexterity is required. Short courses are not intended for learners with extensive experience of painting and drawing.

Longer courses

These longer courses allow learners to develop skills and techniques or an understanding of a medium or genre. These are mainly practical courses where a degree of manual dexterity is required
Tuition is a mixture of presentations / demonstrations, discussions /critiques and individual work, students will need to look at the work of other artists both contemporary and historical and need to be prepared to participate fully to get the most out of the course.

All students are automatically registered with OCN and tutors will help learners to identify their learning goals and encourage them to map their learning experience against OCN accredited criteria.

Learners are encouraged to work at one of three levels, however individuals in the same group may well be working at different levels and on different aspects of a particular technique or medium.

At the end of the course students will receive a certificate to recognise their achievement.

Although most courses start in September it is possible to join one of these courses up to and including January.

We run several art courses, see our Frequently Asked Questions for more information about their level and content.
