We are committed to helping Kent's young people prepare
for employment.
This means making sure that school and college leavers have more
choice and the right skills to follow their goals.
We have committed to some targets to ensure that this vision is
achieved. For example, we will ensure that all 13 to 19 year-olds
receive the very best careers guidance, expand the vocational 14 to
16 education programme and introduce a Kent apprenticeship
programme - Kent Success.
We are working with
KEY Training Services to deliver Kent Success.
KEY operates a 52-week rolling programme which means young
people can join the programme at any time throughout the year.
For young people who are finishing school and are unsure of what
they want to do, or for those who are currently not in education,
employment or training and would like to gain work experience while
they learn, this is a really good opportunity to help build a firm
base for leading an independent life later on. Going into the
workplace improves confidence and self-esteem and helps with the
development of independent thinking and initiative skills.
We are funding the scheme jointly with the Learning & Skills
Council.
The apprentice is paid £80 per week and will be employed on a
fixed term KCC Apprenticeship contract for 12 months.
Apprentices will complete their NVQ level 2 plus a technical
certificate, and key skills dependent on GCSE grades. A 'Level 2'
qualification can take up to one year to complete; where
appropriate they can progress to an Advanced (Level 3)
Apprenticeship.
Currently the apprenticeships offered by Kent Success are in
business and admin, health and social care, childcare, customer
service and hospitality and catering. Some examples of current
placements include:
- the Youth Service
- Adult Services
- The Learning Disability Team
- Legal and Democratic Services
- Environment and Waste
- placements in nurseries and schools
- customer service placements in KEY Training.
Following individual interviews and assessments applicants are
interviewed by their prospective placement to confirm their
suitability for the position.
We are leading the way in Kent and hope that many other public
and private organisations across the county will engage in the
apprenticeship programme to ensure that young people have the
widest choice of apprenticeship opportunities.
