Solution to means enquiry for council tax
|
At Maidstone Borough Council, there were a large number of
cases awaiting a Means Enquiry Hearing. The innovative approach was
to send a letter to the residents who hadn't paid their council tax
reminding them of the costs involved if court proceedings were
activated. The letter also invited them to come in as a final
opportunity before the costs were incurred.
There was a 60% response rate and the council either achieved
full payment or an acceptable repayment plan from most of them.
Some, needless to say defaulted, but the overall exercise was a
success!
Benefits
- Increased the collection of tax and reduced the number awaiting
a court hearing which benefited both Maidstone Borough Council and
the Magistrates' Court.
