Geocaching
|
Geocaching is a countryside treasure hunt involving the
use of handheld global position system (GPS) receivers. Geocachers
hide 'caches' - usually waterproof boxes filled with inexpensive
treasures and a log book - in locations across the
countryside.
Once hidden the GPS coordinates of the 'cache' are published on
the Explore Kent website for others to view. Other geocachers can
use these coordinates and any clues provided to locate the hidden
treasure.
The finder is welcome to take an item from the cache as well as
fill in the logbook to record their find. The development of this
idea was carried out in conjunction with a volunteer.
Benefits
- A fun new activity that has proved very popular with the
public.
- A great new way to encourage people to visit the
countryside.
- Families will love the treasure hunt element, while regular
walkers will enjoy the added incentive to a day's
walking.
