Historical links
|
Kent's historical links with
Virginia date back four hundred years ago to the founding of
the Jamestown settlement, the first of its kind in
America.
In December 1606, the ship Godspeed and its two sister ships
left Gravesend. The 105 men on board founded Jamestown in May
1607.
Their journey established links between Kent and America that
went on to encompass the story of Pocahontas, who is buried in
Gravesend.
Historical Kent families such as the Culpepers and Fairfaxes of
Leeds Castle, the Digges of Chilham Castle and the Wyatts of
Allington Castle became involved in the early development of the
American state of Virginia. Lawrence Washington of Maidstone was an
ancestor of President George
Washington. |
