Sturry Safety Week - June 2011

people during a crime prevention week in Sturry. More than
400 people were given help and information about how to keep
themselves and their property safe.
The week began at the Sturry Primary School
summer fair and continued at various places around the village such
as the church and the library. The week was supported by a
number of organisations and agencies.
As well as offering people the chance to mark
their property free smoke alarms were given to the over 60s.
Community Warden Angel Pullen said “it was a brilliant event, I’m
so pleased that got to talk to and help so many people”.
Lydd Gardening Club
Back in 2003 KCC Community
Wardens were taking part in a litter pick in Lydd. During the day a
9 year old boy (who had been in a lot of trouble at school and with
the Police) mentioned how he would like to learn how to grow
vegetables. As a result an allotment was secured for the
young people of Lydd and a gardening club was set up. Over the
years successive wardens have continued to link in with the
gardening club which has grown from strength to strength and won
several awards. It has attracted much funding and now has its own
log cabin with full facilities. It has attracted much praise and
has featured on local television.

Dog
Fouling Initiative
KCC Community Wardens from the
Sevenoaks and Dartford teams have been promoting their Dog
Fouling initiative throughout the districts. The project was to
highlight just how big an issue fouling can be. The wardens have
been out and about providing a presence around 'high-foul' areas
including playing fields and parks. Wardens have approached dog
owners with advisory leaflets and the offer of free dog bags before
they take the dog for a walk. This initiative has gained a lot of
praise from not only dog owners but the public in general and many
have commented that although you always see the fouling, you don't
often see anyone dealing with it so it's really good to see. During
recent bouts of warm weather families were being put off from using
local facilities for picnics and playtime due to the level of
fouling on the fields. Through the efforts of the wardens in
partnership with other agencies the districts have become visibally
clearer of unsightly fouling.

Tenterden Healthy Walk Project - May 2011
On Friday 13 May the Tenterden Healthy Walk group celebrated
their second anniversary. Over the last 2 years the group has
increased in size and regularly has around 20 walkers. The group
meets at 10am at The Zion Baptist Church, High Street,
Tenterden. After the walk they return to the church for
coffee, biscuits and a chat.
The group recently welcomed a new volunteer
walk leader from Tenterden Disabled in Action who is setting up a
new health walk. The new walk is intended to be a little shorter
and wheelchair friendly so that it is accessible to everyone
whatever their ability.
Everyone who attends the walk agrees that
they enjoy the weekly walks and find the social aspect of walking
within a group to be very beneficial. Many agree that they would
probably not do any regular walks if it wasn't for the group.
The group welcomes new walkers, just turn up on a Friday
morning.
