Private fostering is not illegal.
The child's parents, private foster carer, or anyone else
involved in setting up the private fostering arrangement are
legally required to inform Children's Social
Services. This should be done as soon as possible
- ideally at least 6 weeks before the care begins.
Unlike other referrals to Children's Social Services, there does not
need to be any concern about the care the child is receiving for a
referral to be made.
Because a parent is still responsible for their child when they
are in a private fostering arrangement, it is really important that
the parent and private foster carer agree how the child will be
cared for and what the financial arrangements will be.
