Who are we?

We are the Children's Occupational Therapy Service and we provide an equipment and adaptation service to disabled children from 0-18yrs. We are part of the Kent Disabled Children's Team.

Who do we help?

We offer help to any child from 0-18yrs who is permanently and substantially disabled. We will asssess any child referred to us to see if they are eligible for our help.

How do I get help for my child?

You can contact the Disabled Children's Occupational Therapy Service if you want an assessment for your child. You can call us or make a written referral directly to the Kent Contact and Assessment Service.

What sort of help do you provide?

If your child is eligible for our help, we will formally assess your child's needs and make recommendations about what sort of help we think your child should have. These may include installation of standard or specialist equipment or changes to the child's environment. You will be given a copy of our assessment.

How quickly will my child be assessed?

We aim to see as many children as possible within 28 days of receiving a referral.

What sort of changes will be made and will I have to pay for them?

We want to make sure that your child has the safest and most appropriate environment for their needs.

Will you support me as well as my child?

Of course. We give information and advice to disabled children and their carers about other places you can get help. We will also ask you to tell us your opinion of our service and ask for your suggestions to improve it.

What do the Occupational Therapists do?

Our Occupational Therapists are trained to work with children who have difficulties with the practical and social skills used in everyday life. They aim to make sure your child is as physically, psychologically and socially independent as possible and has the best possible control over the practical side of their life. We do this by adapting their environment to suit their needs, or by providing equipment. We also work closely with other professionals who are involved with disabled children, such as District Councils, Health Authorities, Education and voluntary organisations.

What do your Occupational Therapy Assistants and Technical staff do?

Occupational Therapy Assistants are experienced staff who work alongside the Occupational Therapists. Some work as technicians to fit equipment such as rails or ramps.
