There are several types of adoption and we can support and guide you through the various different routes to adding a child to your family.

Do you wish to Adopt?

If so, you will need to apply to be approved by Kent County Council (KCC) which is an approved adoption agency.

Once approved you will be considered to adopt a child who is currently being looked after by KCC.

For further information see:

Do you wish to adopt a child from overseas?

There is a legal process for anyone in Kent wishing to adopt a child from abroad (even if a relative):

  1. You must first be approved by KCC's adoption team. This will involve a payment fee.
  2. The Department for Children, Schools & Families (DCSF) must then issue a certificate of eligibility.
  3. Once you have this certificate the application can then proceed to the overseas country.

It is a criminal offence to bring a child into the UK for adoption without first having gone through this process.

Do you want to adopt your step-child?

If you are the partner of a birth parent you can apply to adopt the birth parents' child. This can be done as a couple with the birth parent or individually.

There are certain criteria that you must fill to adop a step-child and a full assessment will need to be undertaken by KCC's adoption team on behalf of the court.

See the step-parent adoption page for more information.

Do you want to adopt a  relative?

Applicant(s) must be at least 21 years old but can be single - or married and applying jointly. The child must be at least 19 weeks old.  A full assessment must be undertaken by KCC's adoption team on behalf of the court.
