The Heritage Lottery Fund has allocated £6.5 million to the project led by Kent County Council and Canterbury City Council to conserve and enhance the late Victorian building, provide a brand new extension, and transform the range and quality of displays and services which it offers. Access will also be improved throughout the building and a central glass lift will give people better access to upper floors.

Improving the library has been a goal for sometime. There will be increased space for books, a large local studies area, a new children's library and an area specifically designed for teenagers. There will also be education spaces for schools and informal learning groups.
The Beaney is likely to close for redevelopment in the winter of 2008 and reopen in 2011. A temporary library service will be provided during this time at a nearby location.

In order to progress the project some opening up works are necessary. Disruption will be minimal but the lending library will be closed for one day on Wednesday 12 March. The Reference Library and Museum will not be affected.
