The 2000-2006 Franco-British INTERREG IIIA Programme aimed
to develop cross-border co-operation between eligible areas. The
Programme encouraged greater integration through "strengthening
cross-border co-operation, promoting a balanced spatial development
and through the promotion of an attractive and welcoming
region".
The eligible area for the programme consisted of four British
counties/unitaries and four French Départements: Kent, Medway, East
Sussex, Brighton & Hove, Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Seine-Maritime
and Somme. Organisations from the adjacent areas of Surrey, West
Sussex, Calvados, Eure, Oise and Aisne were also able to take part
in individual projects if the activities were of benefit to the
main eligible area.
The programme ran from 2000 to 2006 although some individual
projects ran until mid-2008. Projects could be developed under nine
themes or measures:
- Education and training
- Citizenship
- Social cohesion
- Economic development
- Research
- Transport and port economies
- Tourism
- Culture
- Environment.
The programme brought some €108 million to the eligible area and
during its lifetime, supported over 230 cross-border co-operation
projects including a number of micro-projects. Kent and Medway
organisations secured over €38m of European Funding (European
Regional Development Fund) to develop more than 140 Franco-British
projects which contributed to the development of the cross -border
area.
The Interreg IIIa Programme is now closed to further project
applications but has been replaced by two
Interreg IVa cross-border programmes which were launched in
2008.
