Applying for a skip licence

Information for householders

If you wish to have a builders skip or container located on the public highway, it is necessary for the skip or container to be covered by a local Highway Authority licence.

This licence will ensure that the correct public liability insurance cover the skip or container and that statutory traffic management is adhered to.

However, it is not necessary for you to apply for the licence. The skip company from whom you hire your skip will do this on your behalf.

Information for skip companies

If you or your customer wish to locate a skip or a container on the public highway it is necessary for the skip or container to be covered by a local Highway Authority licence. This licence must be applied for at least 5 days prior to the date that you wish to place the skip on the highway.

Your local divisional office will issue this licence following site inspections for an initial period of 7 days at a cost of £16.00. If you wish to renew your licence, each subsequent 7 days will be charged at £16.00.

If you wish to become an approved Skip Operator then you can download the form to complete then send it to the council.

Please read the appropriate guidance notes carefully and read the terms and conditions before completing this form.

It will be necessary to supply a copy of your £5 million public liability insurance on application, unless you are already a Kent County Council approved provider.
