Mikal brought up her four children largely as a single parent, before studying for a law degree as a mature student at the University of Kent where she gained a 2:1 in 2007. Discovering a passion for law, she was awarded a Masters in Law with Distinction in 2008, and the LPC with Commendation from the Oxford Institute of Legal Practice in 2009. She completed her training in Kent with Girlings Solicitors before qualifying in 2011.
She immediately moved to her first post-qualifying role as permanent public law solicitor in the field of child protection at KCC Legal Services. She frequently acts as advocate in care proceedings hearings (contested and uncontested) in both the East Kent Family Proceedings and County Courts.
She has acted as a volunteer mentor to third year law students at Kent Law School since its inception, and has enjoyed her ongoing role as pro bono legal advisor for the multi award winning Kent Law Clinic for the past three years in the contentious area of Landlord and Tenant law/Housing Act 2004.
In addition, she has successfully taken a number of pro bono cases to the appeal court tribunals in welfare benefits and the residential property tribunal, and the civil courts (landlord and tenant law) on behalf of landlords or tenants from the Kent Law Clinic and others unable to afford legal representation.
Mikal is a current elected member on the General Purposes Committee at the Kent Law Society, and a longstanding member of the Lawyers Christian Fellowship.
