School Displays - Fire Safety Precautions
The Kent Fire and Rescue Service undertake fire safety
inspections of schools in the county. These inspections have
identified as a risk the use of displays of schoolwork within busy
entrances/exits, reception areas and corridors.
The risk is that displays could enable the spread of fire as
well as hindering the means of escape. It is not suggested the use
of displays is discontinued as they are important, however the
following should be considered when setting up a display:
- Ensuring there are no free standing displays blocking a fire
exit or restricting busy reception areas
- Providing space between both freestanding and wall mounted
boards to reduce the risk of fire spreading
- The amount of flammable material attached to each display
- Encasing the boards within a flame retardant material
Good management of fire safety is essential to help prevent
fires.
