Oil storage tanks
Leaking oil storage tanks pose a significant health and safety
risk, damage the environment and can require considerable financial
outlay to remedy.
If the oil level in the tank drops suddenly this can be an
indication of a leak. If a leaking pipe line is suspected, either
underground or above ground, contact the Property Service Desk
immediately on 0870 3000346.
Oil storage tanks must be bunded (protected) in case of a leak.
If a new tank is being installed sites should ensure it is self
bunded in accordance with current legislation. The condition of the
tank should also be regularly checked and if it has corroded
renewal must be included in any future maintenance plans.
If the oil leaks into soil the Environment Agency should be
informed due to the risk of contaminating the water course.
