Asbestos information
In order to meet statutory requirements, we began rolling out
a programme of asbestos surveys in 2002 for buildings owned or
occupied by Kent County Council.
The purpose of the survey is to identify any asbestos containing
materials that may be present on a site. If asbestos is found a
risk assessment is made to determine if remedial works are
required. The survey carried out is a management survey, which
identifies asbestos that is touchable or visible within reach only.
Where building works or alterations are to be carried out then a
refurbishment and demolition survey must be undertaken.
The surveys and any resultant remedial works commissioned
by us are carried out by our approved contractors (in
full consultation with the premises manager), who have to comply
with strict health and safety codes of practice, guidelines and
legislation.
We have a legal duty to prevent or reduce exposure to
asbestos 'so far as is reasonably practicable'. However, anyone
with a responsibility for the property also has a duty to manage
asbestos risks and to ensure that:
- No one is exposed to asbestos risks.
- The asbestos register is up to date, accurate and accessible at
all times.
- If an asbestos survey has been carried out, the location of any
asbestos is included on the register.
- Kent County Council is notified if there are any changes to the
condition or any new asbestos is discovered
All contractors must be shown the asbestos survey report on
their arrival to site and asked to read and sign it before starting
any work. This ensures they are aware of the possible presence of
asbestos and, if known, the location of any identified asbestos. It
is also recommended that our Safe Working Permit is used to
control contractor activities.
