Business and candidate criteria

Business criteria

To be able to receive the grant, businesses must:

  • be based in Kent
  • have less than 1000 employees (applies to units/departments in public sector and does not apply to social enterprises)
  • have not taken on an apprentice for the last 12 months.

Candidate criteria

To receive the grant the business must employ a candidate who:

  • Has been claiming Jobseeker’s allowance for at least 3 months
  • Is aged 18-24

If your business does not meet the criteria, taking on an apprentice may still be an option for you:

  • For 16 to 18 year old apprentices, the government will fund their training and employers pay only for the salary
  • For 19-24 year old apprentices, employers may be asked to contribute up to 50% of the training costs
  • Employers are responsible for paying their apprentices’ wages; the national minimum wage for apprentices is £2.65 per hour

An apprenticeship is one of the most cost-effective ways to develop your business and improve productivity - watch our film to show how effective they can be.
