Advanced decisions
Advanced decisions were previously known as
'Advanced directives'.
Following the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, it
allows people to plan for what should happen if the individual ever
becomes unable to make particular decisions in the future.
For example, it allows people to make advance
decisions, if a person has not made plans and at some point becomes
unable to make a particular decision, the MCA states that someone
else may make that decision.
This could be anyone; a friend, relative,
informal carer, professional carer, GP, social worker
or nurse.
