Taking a break and meeting people

Day centres

If you find it difficult getting out you might like to join a day centre.

Here you can meet people, have lunch and get involved with a variety of social activities including outings. Services such as hairdressing or chiropody are often available at a small charge. Some day centres can cater for more frail older people.

Transport to and from the centre can usually be arranged.

There are many day centres in Kent. Some are independent and some are attached to residential homes.

You can search our online care directory to find out more about the day services available in Kent. Other agencies, like AgeUK, also have day centres throughout Kent.

Respite care

It can be difficult caring for someone who needs a lot of attention and also frustrating being so dependent on others. It can help everyone to have a break.

Respite care provides this short-term, temporary relief. It is commonly referred to as a 'short break' and can be beneficial to both carers and those they care for.

If you or your carers need a break from coping at home, many residential homes offer short periods of respite care. You can search our online care directory to find out what services are available near you.

There is likely to be a charge for these services. In most cases you would have to pay the cost of this support yourself although if you have been assessed as needing help or support in your daily activities or care, you may be entitled to receive financial support from us. Find out what support you are eligible to receive from us.
