Services we provide

Being prepared for incidents and disasters

We all hope never to be affected by a major incident or disaster. We also hope that if one does occur someone will know what to do.

The emergency services, including the NHS, local authorities, and Environment Agency, have plans and arrangements to assist the community during emergencies. In Kent these plans have been developed and tested.

However, individuals can also help by ensuring they are also prepared.

Consider the following things:

  • Have important contact details (the emergency services) at hand – and do not rely only on mobile phones.
  • Have a record of any medication you take, or be able to take some with you if you have to temporarily evacuate your home.
  • Be ready to locate your insurance details and other important documents quickly.
  • Utility companies (electricity, gas, water, telephone) operate priority schemes for their most vulnerable customers. Details of these schemes are on bills or on the company's website or helpline. Register to ensure you get assistance in the event of an emergency. These schemes are generally free of charge.
  • Be prepared to keep cool during hot weather and heatwaves.
  • Be prepared for cold weather and make sure you keep warm in winter. If you depend on your car for work or other commitments, consider cost effective aids such as tyre socks (or fabric snow chains) for snow and ice driving. Check advice on AA or RAC websites.
  • Find out if your home is at risk of flooding, how to prepare and how to report a flood.

  • During incidents check for the latest information on your local council, utility company or police website.
  • During incidents listen to the local radio for information and always have a battery operated radio available.
