Matthew's success story
Matthew looked to start her career in social care by
signing up to take part in our apprenticeship scheme pilot.
- What do you do?
My first placement has been with Charing Healthcare at one of
their residential homes which provides support for older
people.
At this placement I have learnt about working with older people
and have been part of the staff team working shifts to provide
hands on care and support to the residents.
- What did you do before this?
Before joining the apprenticeship programme I was self employed and
working as a roofer.
- Why did you become an apprentice?
I felt that becoming an apprentice was the best way to get into
social care as it lets me study for the NVQ while I am working and
I can learn a lot from working with more experienced staff.
I chose social care as every day is different. There is always
something new every day and I get so much back from caring for
people.
- What is the most important thing that you have learnt
so far?
Patience is vital in social care! I’m quite a patient person and
I’ve found that this has allowed me to create good relationships
with clients and other members of staff.
