Whilst there is a relationship
between domestic abuse and using or misusing alcohol or other
drugs, it is not the cause of abusive behaviour. However, it
is often used as an excuse for violent or abusive
behaviour.
Substance abuse is primarily harmful to the user, whilst
domestic violence or abuse is harmful to the person being targeted
for the abuse. Abusers have chosen to act in this way and they are
the ones who must change their behaviour for the abuse to stop.
When a substance abuser becomes sober, problems with the
domestic violence or abuse do not automatically disappear. Abusers
still need to change their attitudes, beliefs and behaviour to
ensure the abuse does not continue. |
