Deafblindness Awareness Week - 25 June to 1 July
2007
|
Deafblindness is possibly the loneliest condition in the
world.
Did you know?
- Since April 2006 over 1,000 deafblind people have been
identified in Kent
- The majority of deafblind people are over 75 years of age and
have developed sight and hearing loss in later life. It is
recognised that deafblindness can sometimes be masked by other
disabilities such as learning disabilities or dementia
- It is expected that there are actually between 1,500 and 2,000
deafblind people in Kent
- It is estimated that there are three deafblind children in very
10,000. Based on this figure the estimated number of deafblind
children in Kent is 100
- Deafblindness in children is often a hidden disability due to
its low incidence and the fact that nearly all deafblind children
(93.5%) have additional medical conditions, physical or learning
disabilities that can sometimes mask deafblindness.
