Who can adopt?

image: photo of boy To be eligible to adopt you must be aged 21 or over and be clear of certain criminal convictions, particularly any offences involving children. There is no upper age limit but naturally we need to make sure you will have the health and energy to provide a stable long-term home for the child.

Due to research in relation to the effects of passive smoking, we have a no smoking policy for those who adopt a child under five years of age. We welcome applications to adopt from a range of different people you can be single, married or you may be in a relationship with a partner.

We welcome applications from people with disabilities and those of any nationality, race, sexual orientation, religion and cultural background.

You don't need to own your own home but we will need to be sure that you have sufficient space to care for a child, and that you have appropriate financial resources available. Financial assistance may be available in some cases. This will be based on your financial circumstances and the needs of any child to be placed with you for adoption.

We expect that an adoptive parent will be at home full-time with a child for at least six months after the child has been placed. This may be longer depending on the age and the needs of the particular child. Children placed for adoption will often be the youngest in a family, and we suggest a gap of at least two years between the adopted child and any other child in the family.

We aim to assess all applicants in a fair and open way so that we can be sure that when a child is placed for adoption, the child's adoptive parents can care for a child in a safe and loving environment throughout their lives.
