ISSP Evaluation and Success
Kent Police evaluated the Kent and Medway scheme. They looked at
all the young people who both started and finished the scheme
between April 2002 and March 2003. The Police looked at the
offending of young people in the six months before they came on the
scheme, during their time on the scheme and the six months after
they had finished the scheme.
There were some interesting findings in the evaluation which
included:
Number of offences committed
| Crime |
Six months before ISSP |
Six months after ISSP |
| Burglary |
27 |
1 |
| Theft and handling |
79 |
42 |
| Motoring offences |
30 |
9 |
| Total |
136 |
52 |
This represents a real improvement in both tackling crime and
improving public safety.
Since then the ISSP scheme has continued to monitor the progress
of each young person who has been on the scheme. It is through
doing this that the scheme can measure its effectiveness in meeting
the aim of reducing offending.
Young people who have finished the scheme since April 2004 have
been monitored on the amount of crimes committed. The findings
are:
Total number of crimes committed by the young people in
the six months before they started on ISSP: 220
Total number of crimes committed by the young people in
the six months after they finished on ISSP: 54
At present we are unable to break these down into specific
categories but aim to do so in the future when there is sufficient
staff resources to allow us to do so. |
