The Kent Youth Offending Service works with young people aged between 10 and 17 years who are offending or at risk of offending. It is made up of six Youth Offending Teams (YOT's) and is key to the success of the youth justice system.

The Youth Offending Service reports directly to the Chief Executive of Kent County Council and has wide ranging responsibilities including:

  • prevention of youth crime
  • dealing with youth crime
  • promoting safer communities
  • ensuring that the victims of youth crime feel that the criminal justice system works for them.

Kent Youth Offending Service aims to:

  • confront young offenders with the consequences of their offending for themselves, their families, their victims and the community
  • provide interventions which tackle the particular factors which put a young person at risk of offending
  • ensure that punishment is proportionate to the seriousness and persistence of offending
  • encourage reparation to their victims by young offenders
  • reinforce the responsibilities of parents and carers
  • provide all youth offending services within the context of anti-discriminatory practice.
