Choosing a home

In choosing a home it is essential to consider the needs and preferences of the individual and the kind of setting which will suit them best. Visits to care homes are advised in order to gain as thorough a picture as possible about the choices available. It is also advisable to obtain a copy of the most recent inspection report for the home. You can look at the reports on the Commission for Social Care Inspection website (this link will open in a new window). Alternatively, you can ask the home to show you their latest report.

This Choosing a home checklist might be useful to take with you when looking round a care home to help you make a choice.

Arrangements can be made directly with the home where the individual is able to pay the care fees in full.

If an application for Adult Services funding is requested, a care manager will meet with the individual and their carer, to discuss the person's needs and how these can best be met. If residential care is required, a financial assessment will also be undertaken in order to calculate the prospective resident's contribution towards his/her fees. We have produced a booklet called Charging for Residential Care. It contains essential information for people who may have to pay for their care through Adult Services. You can also obtain a copy from your local Adult Services office.

A helpful booklet entitled "Moving into a Care Home - things you need to know" is available from your local Adult Services office or online from the Department of Health (this link will open in a new window) or by calling 08701 555 455.
