A range of support services enabling adults with a
learning disability to lead ordinary and fulfilled lives within
their local communities are provided by Kent Adult Social Services.
Covering all areas of Kent the main services provided
are:
Independent Living Support
This service provides support for adults with learning
disabilities in their own homes. The majority of people we support
are tenants in their own right and enjoy living in ordinary
housing. Community participation and inclusion underpins all of our
work in this area. All people have a support plan that they devise
with their support worker. This enables them to have choice and
control over the level and nature of support that best meets their
needs and aspirations to live a more fulfilled and independent
life. The kinds of support range from assistance with budgeting,
teaching domestic skills, help with finding a job, learning to
travel independently or just a regular visit to ensure all is
well.
Day Opportunities
We aim to support people with learning disabilities to lead full
and purposeful lives in their own communities and develop a range
of friendships, activities and relationships. In addition to
developing interests or skills and experience they need in order to
move into employment. This type of service also provides a much
needed break from caring for some family carers.
Respite Services
Provides a range of short break services for people with a
learning disability. All of our residential units are registered
with the Commission for Social Care Inspection, who demand high
standards in the type of accommodation and quality of care
provided. People can stay overnight, for the weekend or a full week
stay. This is often seen as a short break away from home for the
individual as well as their family/carer.
Adult Placement Scheme
This supported living service helps people who have a learning
disability to find a new home living with Adult Placement
Carers.
What Experience is required?
It is important that potential staff members are interested in
working with individuals to enable them to play an active part in
their local communities and have a positive 'can do' approach. If
you have the right attitude and are genuinely interested in
empowering others then prior experience is not always necessary.
There is a competency framework and opportunities for learning and
development from a job specific induction to nationally recognised
qualifications.
What Skills are required?
We employ a wide range of staff including drivers/escorts,
cooks, care workers, support workers, day centre officers, team
leaders and managers, so listing all skills is impossible. However
life skills, an ability to support and respect others as well as
having good communication skills are essential for all posts.
What Hours Could I work?
Overall we require people to be flexible and responsive to the
demands of a service that is striving to enable people with a
learning disability to lead a fulfilled life. A range of working
patterns is available, some
parts of the service work a shift pattern covering 24 hours a day 7
day a week while others currently work more traditional day time
hours. |
