Deaf Services in Kent

We provide services to Deaf and partially hearing people of all ages across Kent and Medway. The services offered are:

Social Work

Social Workers are post qualified to work with deaf people providing a service which includes:

  • Assessment, counselling and support in relation to needs arising from deafness.
  • Working with families where a child is diagnosed as having a hearing loss.
  • Addressing the needs of hearing children of deaf parents.
  • Co-working with, or professional advice to, colleagues from Social Services, Education, Health, Police, Probation and Voluntary Agencies.

Support Work

Support workers have a wide ranging role and much of their work is with profoundly deaf people whose first language is British Sign Language (BSL). Efforts include:

  • Provision of information, support and advice.
  • Development of social skills through individual and group work.
  • Encouragement of self advocacy.
  • Involvement of consumers in planning services.

Assessment and provision of Equipment

Assessment/equipment officers provide services to deaf and partially hearing people including:

  • Assessing a person's need for environmental equipment.
  • Arranging provision and installation of environmental equipment.
  • Identifying more complex needs.
  • Carrying out Deaf/Hard of hearing registrations.

What Skills are required to work in Deaf Services?

Support Work/Assessment Work

  • CACDP Level II Sign Language Skills
  • Experience of working with profoundly deaf people
  • Written English to a standard that enables casework files to be maintained adequately
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Have an understanding of Deaf culture
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Self motivated and able to use initiative
  • Full driving licence

Social Work

In addition to the above, social workers will require a qualification in social work and registration with the General Social Care Council (GSCC) (this link will open in a new window).

British Sign Language training can be arranged for new staff who have the other skills required.
