I have 2 roles - Support Worker in a Learning Disabilities Service
and Children's residential service supervisor. Both for Kent County
Council.
How did you come to be working in Social
Care?
Natural progression having qualified in mental health nursing and
looking for a change from working in a hospital for many years, to
working in the community and with young people
What is your working pattern? Part time
working full time hours!
How long have you been working in this
role? Nearly seventeen years
Could you briefly describe a "typical"
day?
A typical day working with children providing respite care -
supporting the children with personal needs and care. Provide and
give them the opportunity to do activities i.e. swimming, bowling,
cooking, creativity, and cinema. Support with daily living tasks.
Provide a varied nutritional diet. Constant reassurance, especially
if the child is homesick.
What is the best thing about your
job? Diversity, seeing a young person flourish and
the promoting independence of the people that I work with.
My ambition for the future To stay focused
with the constant changes in working practices and developments in
KCC. I still get job satisfaction after each shift from the work
that I am doing.
How would people get into this sort of
work?
Through voluntary work or work placements as a good start to gain
some experience. Completing an NVQ Level 3 is helpful and lots of
common sense is needed. See job opportunities in local

Salary: Doing the 2 different roles it is
difficult to give an exact figure but in local government people
doing these sorts of roles would earn around £19000 per year
Hours: 32 hours per week
