Kent 4 star Council

Care Ambassador profile: Claire D

Job title
Community Carer

How did you come to be working in Social Care?
At 14 years old, I started to clean and help serve tea, coffee and meals in a residential home for the elderly. I progressed to being a Care Assistant at age 16.

What is your working pattern?
Part time

How long have you been working in this role?
17 years

Could you briefly describe a "typical" day?
On most days I I work between 8.45am until about 11am doing personal care calls - this involves helping people to get up, washed or showered and dressed. In the late morning I do domestic calls to help people with various tasks around their home such as cooking and cleaning. I start lunch calls at 12.00pm to help people to get their mid day meal.

What is the best thing about your job?
My job is rewarding, being appreciated, making people smile, being able to listen and giving advice (within reason).

My ambition for the future
To become a care manager.

How would people get into this sort of work?
There are frequently Care Assistant jobs advertised in the Job Centre and local newspaper's. In most cases you do not need any specific qualifications to apply as companies will make sure you have an induction and training once you start work. If at school or college it is worth asking about work experience in a care home or doing some voluntary work with people to see if you would like this kind of work.
