Rural towns

Rural towns are at the heart of community life in Kent. They provide focal points for many activities for people living in the town and in the surrounding villages and hamlets.

These towns provide jobs, shopping, transport, specialist services and leisure facilities. A vibrant rural town can improve the quality of life in the area and build a healthy community spirit.

Some rural towns have a fascinating history and have a wealth of traditional architecture and historically important buildings. Recently however, these towns have seen a decline in their income and vitality.

This is due to a variety of economic and social changes; the influence of out-of-town shopping centres for instance, and where people choose to live and work.

Kent County Council is determined to make sure that rural towns are given every opportunity to develop and thrive. And there are numerous partnerships and schemes throughout the county, including:
