We draw on a variety of sources to produce data snapshots of the local economy and labour market.

What information is available on Kent's workforce?

The Forecasts of Kent's Resident Workforce report presents information on those people who live in Kent and who are economically active. It looks at the age of the workforce and the type of occupation and industry of those in employment. It also looks at the importance of London as an employment destination. The report also considers what might happen to Kent's workforce in the future.

How many migrant workers are there in Kent?

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) publishes data on the number of overseas nationals who apply for a national insurance number. They could apply for a national insurance number to either work or claim benefit but we have used the data to indicate the number of migrant workers in Kent districts in the absence of any other data. The latest numbers and a time series of migrant workers in Kent, including details on the countries they have come from, can be found in the Migrant Workers in Kent bulletin.

What is the current unemployment rate in Kent?

Unemployment data is produced monthly from the administrative process of benefit claims. Data on unemployment benefit claimants, and the percentage they represent of the total resident working age population, is gathered monthly for the Kent districts, with national and regional comparisons. The latest unemployment data is available in the monthly unemployment bulletin.

How many people are claiming benefits in Kent?

The number of people claiming a Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) benefit is presented in the Benefit Claimants bulletin. This bulletin presents data for the key DWP benefits including; Income Support (IS)/ Pension Credit (PC), Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Incapacity Benefit (IB) to name but a few.

How many graduates do we have in Kent?

The Graduates in Kent bulletin looks at the number of Kent residents who go into higher education and the number of people who come to Kent to study in higher education. This report also looks at the origin and destination of these graduates and looks at how many of them enter into employment in Kent answering the question 'Does Kent retain its graduates?'.

How many people are employed in manufacturing in Kent?

Counts of employees by broad industrial sector are published annually in the Annual Business Inquiry bulletin. It provides data for the Kent districts and gives national and regional comparisons. It is based on workplace counts and excludes the self-employed.

What do people earn in Kent, compared with the national average?

Earnings data is published in the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE), a national sample survey carried out each April. The data is available at local authority district level and is summarised in the Earnings in Kent 2006 tables. A more detailed report looking at Earnings, Income and Housing Affordability in Kent is also available.

The economic profiles illustrate the economic performance of each of the twelve local authority districts in Kent relative to other areas within England and Wales. These profiles provide an overview of the local economy based on seven indicators. More detailed information on a wide range of social and economic indicators, at district level, is provided in the district profiles. These are continually updated as new information becomes available.
