Gypsies and Travellers

Image: Gypsy and Traveller Unit logoWe manage eight Gypsy and Traveller caravan sites in Kent. Other councils in Kent also manage sites. For details of those sites and how to apply for vacancies, go to sites in Kent and Medway.

If you would like to report the presence of an unauthorised encampment (defined as "caravans or vehicles on land without the landowner's consent and constituting trespass"), contact our general Report and Information Line on 0845 345 0210.

You can also contact the Report and Information Line to find out what's happening with an existing unauthorised encampment and other information relating to Gypsy/Traveller issues. The phone line is open from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to 2pm on Saturdays. Outside those hours, please call 08458 247 100.

We work closely with Medway Council (link opens in a new window), all district councils and Kent Police when unauthorised encampments occur in the county. We manage them when they occur on county council land (such as highways or schools), and we can provide advice to landowners if they occur on privately-owned land.

Find out more about unauthorised encampments, how they are managed by us, and the powers available to the police and local authorities in our two leaflets.

Alternatively, we can send or email a copy of these leaflets to you. Email gypsy.liaison@kent.gov.uk or contact 0845 345 0210.

If you have any questions about unauthorised developments (defined as "the use of privately-owned land with the agreement of the land owner/occupier, but without permission"), please contact the relevant planning authority in Medway (link opens in a new window) or your local district council. We are not involved in these cases.

Regional Spatial Strategy - the South East Plan

Kent's local authorities have to include policies and proposals for new Gypsy and Traveller sites in their Local Development Frameworks (LDFs). To guide them, the number of pitches to be planned for in each district is to be set out in the South East Plan. In October 2007, all Kent and Medway local authorities provided advice to the South East Regional Assembly on Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Provision for the 2006-2016 period. For all information on this advice see our publications page.
