During the late Victorian and Edwardian era, Edward VII
would regularly visit Folkestone to dine and entertain at The Grand
Hotel on the Leas. It was in the conservatory of The Grand,
nicknamed the Monkey Room that the concept of a palm court
orchestra originated.
The town became the place to be seen and many large and imposing
buildings were constructed. Shorncliffe House was one of these
buildings. It is situated on Shorncliffe Road, not far from the
town centre and Folkestone East railway station. The ceremony room
is of elegant proportions, made light and airy by an attractive bay
window to the front. The room provides an atmosphere of relaxed
formality for couples and their guests. The room has seating for 29
and can comfortably accommodate a further 11 standing guests.
At the end of a ceremony, the couple can lead their guests out
for photographs to be taken on the steps of Shorncliffe House or in
the beautiful Kingsnorth Gardens, immediately opposite. For details
of disabled facilities please contact the ceremonies team.
